Originally the stand and the four candelabra depicting the four seasons were part of a dessert set and were accompanied by plates decorated with coral stems. This is how they were described in the list of works presented at the 1867 Paris Exposition. The stand and one of the candelabra can be recognised in an entry in the exhibition brochure. The candelabra and the stand were also presented on their own at the Vienna Exposition in 1873, as ‘table décor’ or centre pieces. In one article about the Exposition, their creator, the ceramicist and culptor Jafet Torelli, was also named.

L’alzata con candelabro è databile intorno al 1875-1880. I temi dominanti sono la terra e l’acqua, che si snodano lungo l’intera composizione creando una gradevole alternanza. La base a volute impreziosite da conchiglie e pietre incastonate, ci riconduce ai temi manieristi, mentre la posa delle figure è tipicamente ottocentesca. Esse rappresentano l’Allegoria della Terra, identificata nella figura di Diana cacciatrice, con la freccia in mano e la falce di luna sulla fronte, e l’Allegoria dell’Acqua, rappresentata con una fanciulla, che si avvolge in una rete.
