The crater vase depicting The Triumph of the Sun was presented at the 1862 London Exposition with the following description: Narrative Medici Vase. The vase recalls the Neo Attic shape of a crater vase found in Rome and preserved at Villa Medici until the end of the eighteenth century, when it was moved to Florence. This shape was a very popular feature of the Doccia Factory’s nineteenth-century production, and acquired the name Medici Vase.

Il decoro plastico è tratto da un calco settecentesco in cera conservato nel Museo Richard Ginori della Manifattura di Doccia e derivante da un bassorilievo raffigurante l’Aurora, attribuito allo scultore fogginiano Giovanni Casini. Rispetto al prototipo in cera, il decoro del vaso presenta notevoli varianti tra cui l’aggiunta sul retro dei due amorini che giocano con due colombe. Sul fronte sono, invece, scomparse le figure alludenti alla Notte ed è stato inserito in alto un amorino reggi fiaccola, inneggiante al trionfo.
